2026: Tenley E. Albright

“I believe that being open to your own curiosity is one of the best ways to learn,” says Tenley E. Albright, MD ’61, a former surgeon and Harvard Medical School faculty member who won Olympic gold in figure skating in 1956. Throughout her life, she has consistently followed that impulse while maintaining a deep, enduring connection to Harvard Medical School.

Since graduating from HMS, Albright has served on the Admissions Committee, the Visiting Committee, and the Women in Medicine Advisory Committee. She also chaired the HMS Alumni Fund from 1995 to 2006 and has been a dedicated member of the Class of 1961 Reunion Committee. Additionally, she is a longtime adviser and advocate for The Family Van and HMS MEDscience, two HMS programs that extend the School’s mission into local underserved communities through health care, screenings, and hands-on educational experiences.

Despite her significant contributions, she met the news with both humility and surprise when she learned she had been selected for the 2026 Distinguished Service Award for HMS Alumni. “I had absolutely no idea, and it never would have even occurred to me,” she says, expressing both honor and awe at being included among the “remarkable group” of individuals who have received the award. “It makes me feel that I ought to go back and do more!”

She joked that if there were an accolade for the School’s greatest admirer, she might nominate herself. Beneath the humor, however, lay a profound sense of gratitude. This recognition feels deeply personal for her, reflecting the community, mentorship, and values that have shaped her path. “It was emotional. It made me think of all the things that so many doctors and alumni I’ve gotten to know over the years are doing.” 

Blazing trails on the ice and in the OR

Albright’s life is filled with extraordinary achievements. She was the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in figure skating, the first woman on the executive committee of the United States Olympic Committee, and the first woman appointed to the surgical staff at New England Baptist Hospital. 

When asked about all of these firsts, she laughs, recalling the 1950 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Washington, D.C., when her competition number was one. “And I liked that,” she says with a grin.

Albright never set out to make history; she was simply following her passions and pushing her limits. She first skated on a pond at age 6, but at 8 years old, was inspired by seeing Gretchen Merrill perform at the Skating Club of Boston Ice Chips show. “It wasn’t so much that she was the champion,” Albright says, “but that she looked like she was flying—so free on the ice. I told my mother, ‘I’d like to try that.’” 

At age 11, Albright was diagnosed with polio, and after getting out of the hospital skating became a form of physical therapy. “I was at one end of the rink, inching along the perimeter, but it felt so good to be there, to be doing anything.” Experiencing illness and rehabilitation at such a young age deepened her empathy for patients and sparked a lasting commitment to public health. That commitment would inform her advocacy for medical education and access to care, including through her service on the Bloomberg Family Foundation board, where she contributes her expertise in global health.

By age 13, she had won her first novice figure skating championship, and in 1952, at age 16, she won her first of five consecutive U.S. women’s national championships. At the 1952 Winter Olympics, she won a silver medal in ladies’ singles figure skating. Four years later, at the Olympic Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, she claimed gold. 

“In skating, it’s almost like a stepladder. You start with the simplest skills and then move on to the next thing. Even in competitions—first your state, then regionals, and finally nationals—it builds gradually.”

Discovering a vocation in medicine

Albright’s interest in medicine was instinctive. She recalls helping a friend who had fallen off a bike as a child. “I think I’ve always run toward, ‘Can I help?’” She describes how the support of her father, Hollis L. Albright, MD ’31, nurtured her interest. He fostered connections for her and influenced her approach to patient care throughout her career. 

Albright enrolled at Radcliffe College as a pre-med student during her skating career, hoping to become a physician like her father. After returning from the 1956 Olympics, she retired from competitive skating to refocus on medicine. 

Before finishing her studies at Radcliffe, she enrolled at HMS after a mentor at Boston Children’s Hospital confirmed that completing her pre-med requirements would be sufficient for admission. She was one of only five women in a class of 135. 

“When I chaired the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine at NIH, we had a special exhibit, Changing The Face of Medicine, featuring bringing more women into the field,” she says. “We’ve made progress, but there’s still work to do, not only in representation but also in making care more accessible and affordable.”

Albright recalls many moments as a student that have stayed with her, but one, in particular, stands out: “I remember running up the stairs to Gordon Hall and suddenly realizing how grateful I was to be able to move my muscles,” she says. “I don’t know why it struck me then, but as I was running, I felt so free.”

Innovation in education and expanding access

She also points to early hands-on learning experiences, such as when Dr. Jim Gordon brought a simulated patient to Building C—an innovative lesson at the time. This approach echoes today in the HMS MEDscience program, a unique educational program that uses simulated medical emergencies to create an immersive learning experience on the HMS campus for high school students and young adults interested in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Albright is closely involved with the program.

“Tenley is an innovator, but she does it quietly. She sets the stage for great things to happen,” says Nancy Oriol, MD ’79, faculty associate dean for community engagement in medical education at HMS and co-founder of MEDscience and The Family Van. “She brings the right people together, helps outline the problem, and then allows solutions to emerge. Tenley is a role model of persistence and resilience, inspiring both me and my MEDscience partner, Executive Director Julie Joyal, as well as the program’s students.” 

Oriol says that what makes Albright’s partnership so valuable is not only what she helps build but also what she does to uplift others along the way. 

“Mentor, teacher, adviser, friend—what do you call the person who not only opens doors for you but gives you the confidence to walk through them, and then celebrates your success as only a real friend can?” Oriol asks.

Albright sees MEDscience as one way to address accessibility issues in health care. “I’m really excited about this program because we worry about not having enough people entering health sciences, not just as physicians but at every level, and this is an opportunity for students to explore various careers,” she says. “It’s fascinating to be with them!” 

Her commitment to mentorship and opening doors reflects her broader motivation for staying engaged. 

Honoring a legacy, shaping a future

In 2001, she and her brother, Nile L. Albright, AB ’61, MD, established the Hollis L. Albright, MD ’31 Symposium in memory of their father, who devoted his life to surgery, patient care, and student mentorship. The annual symposium highlights new scientific initiatives at HMS and also includes the presentation of the Albright Scholar Award, which honors an HMS student who demonstrates excellence in the surgical sciences. “He was so keen on addressing the whole patient, and we wanted to recognize students who embody that—and many do. In fact, this year we awarded the honor to two students,” Albright says.

The symposium is yet another way Albright remains closely connected to the School. As she reflects on her decades of service to HMS, she returns to the guiding principle that has shaped her journey: being curious and open to possibility. 

“I’m a strong believer in serendipity. If you’re curious about things, it can lead you in all sorts of directions. The important thing is to be willing to embrace whatever situation unfolds.” 

She says this mindset allowed her to pursue two demanding paths: medicine and skating. In hindsight, she sees how deeply the two have informed each other. 

“What I didn’t realize while training and skating was that everything I was doing would serve as valuable life lessons—preparing, visualizing, committing to something, and seeing how far you can go. Those are skills that translate anywhere.”

While Albright acknowledges how much HMS has changed since she was a student, she is equally struck by what has remained constant. The pace of innovation may have accelerated, and the scope of medicine may have expanded, but the core values—curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to patients—still define the experience.
