Alumni Council Member Attributes
To create a diverse slate of candidates for the Alumni Council while considering the current composition of the Council and the School’s future needs, the Slate Committee evaluates the following attributes:
- A commitment to engaging with and representing the views of your Pentad and fellow alumni.
- An interest in and concern for the growth, success, and overall quality and continual improvement of HMS’ education and research programs.
- Recent active involvement with HMS alumni (e.g., participation on a Reunion Committee, serving as a Class Agent, attending or organizing regional events, etc.) and/or engagement with current medical students outside of employment.
- The ability to dedicate the time and energy necessary for effective service.
- Leadership experience in their medical specialty, professional medical society, medical education, or medical institution, as well as experience in a professional setting, organization, or board.
- Skills in consensus-building, including a willingness to listen to opposing views, the ability to respectfully disagree, and the capacity to collaborate toward achieving defined goals.
- Philanthropic support for HMS.
- Consideration of the interests of Harvard University as a whole.
Alumni Council Nominations
Those elected by acclamation take office for a three-year term and are expected to attend two all-day meetings in Boston and one virtual meeting each year and possess a willingness to listen to fellow alumni and bring their interests and concerns to the Alumni Council. You can recommend an HMS alumna or alumnus (including yourself) via email.
Constitution and bylaws
The HMAA constitution was last ratified at the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Medical Alumni Association on Friday, June 7, 2024.
